The Hazel in Caramel Socks are smooth with a little bit of crunch! Something a bit more interesting than plain chocolate, but still nice and straightforward. These socks take step away from simple knits and purls… what happens if we add some yarnovers? No, I’m not adding lace to these socks, the fourth instalment of the DK Selection-Box of Socks eBook, instead I’m using yarnovers to create some extra texture and a little bit of interest while you’re knitting. The other great thing about adding a simple texture is that it makes it much easier to count how many rounds you’ve worked!

The socks are knitted from the top down, with a heel-flap and gusset construction. They have an all-over textured pattern on the leg, with the textured pattern continuing into the heel flap and the top of the foot. The sole of the sock is knitted in plain stocking stitch.

The Hazel in Caramel Socks are written in sizes to fit the whole family [ten sizes, in circumferences from 8.5 cm (3.5 in) to 28 cm (11.25 in) – if you have an especially knitworthy family to knit for, you could make a full set of matching socks!]

The socks are knitted in a wool blend DK with 25% nylon, which makes the yarn stronger and increases its lifespan. If you’re knitting for someone extra-special, why not see if your favourite indie dyer has a wool/nylon DK weight yarn that you could try as a treat to yourself?

Finished leg circumference 8.5 (10.5, 12.75 // 14.75, 16.75, 19 // 21, 23.25, 25.25 // 27.25) cm [3.25 (4.25, 5 // 6, 6.75, 7.5 // 8.5, 9.25, 10 // 11) in]

Finished foot circumference 8.5 (11.5, 12.5 // 15.5, 17, 20 // 21, 24, 25.5 // 28.5) cm [3.5 (4.5, 5 // 6.25, 6.75, 8 // 8.5, 9.75, 10.25 // 11.25) in]

Designed to be worn with approximately 10% negative ease. Choose a sock with a finished circumference approximately 10% smaller than the measured circumference of your foot around the widest part.

Tension
Stocking stitch
28 sts and 40 rnds = 10 cm (4 in) in stocking stitch worked in the round on 3 mm (US 2.5) needles after wet blocking, or size needed to obtain correct tension.

Pattern
28.5 sts and 40 rnds = 10 cm (4 in) in pattern worked in the round on 3 mm (US 2.5) needles after wet blocking, or size needed to obtain correct tension.

Yarn
45 (75, 110 // 155, 205, 260 // 310, 375, 445 // 515) m [50 (85, 125 // 170, 225, 285 // 340, 415, 490 // 565) yds] of DK-weight yarn (yardages are approximate as the amount of yarn used will depend on the length of the foot, which is adjustable).

I would recommend using a dedicated sock yarn that is tightly plied wool and has some nylon content for durability.

Needles
This pattern is written to be needle-neutral. You can use your preferred method for knitting in the round.

3 mm (US 2.5) and 2.75 mm (US 2) needles, either: DPNs, 15 cm (6 in), set of 5; or Circular needle, at least 80 cm (32 in) in length to work magic loop; or Circular needle, 22.5 cm [9 in] in length (note that if you are using a short circular, you will need to switch to DPNs or magic loop to work the toe)

Notions
Fixed/removable stitch markers x 5; Sock blockers (optional)

Pattern notes
The instructions are for the smallest size, with larger sizes in parentheses: A (B, C // D, E, F // G, H, I // J). If only one number is given, it applies to all sizes.

The sample is knitted in Novita Nalle (DK, 260 m per 100 g ball, 75% wool, 25% nylon) in 751 Gooseberry. Alternative yarn suggestions can be found in this blog post.

The sample is knitted in size I.
